How long have you been working at Country Lane?
This is my fourth year as principal of Country Lane and my 26th year in education.

Tell us something about your family.
I have a 23 year old son who graduated from college last May and is now working/studying to be a firefighter. I have two Australian Shepherds-a 12 year old named Blue and a brand new puppy named Remy. I have a younger brother and sister. My family and I really enjoy traveling abroad and trying new things.

Who/what is your inspiration for your current role or in life?
I have three. First, my mom, who was a career educator and modeled for me the best in teaching. Next my mentor as a new teacher, Joan Harrington; she taught me the power of collaboration and creativity in teaching. Finally, one of my superintendents, whose motto was: “Students First”.

What has been the most rewarding part of your job?
The chance to be out in all the classrooms watching the outstanding teaching and learning that happens at Country Lane. Also, getting to interact with all the students during lunch recess.

What has been your most fulfilling contribution/accomplishment at your work place?
Gosh-I think working together with the staff in focusing on a positive school climate through our new vision (Be curious. Be kind. Be the change.) and how we incorporate this into our daily work.

What is your vision/mission for Country Lane at your current role?
Our Vision - Be curious. Be kind. Be the change.
Our Mission - A Country Lane Elementary education will ensure that:

  • Students exhibit curiosity by asking questions, thinking critically, working hard, and trying new ideas.

  • Students will show kindness by taking care of themselves and others, respecting differences, and being patient and supportive of one another.

  • Students will impact change by finding ways to make a difference for themselves and their community as they work toward a better future.

Our Goals - The Country Lane staff will build on this premise by actively investigating and refining our skill set through the lens of:

  • instruction that engages all students equitably

  • systemic and (rigorous) expectations with supports to help all students succeed

  • a school climate that promotes physical and emotional well-being

Who was the most inspiring teacher in your life and why?
I have several educators that inspired me. I think my psychology teacher in high school was at the top of the list. She encouraged me to major in psychology in college.

If you could have one staff member super power, what would it be?
Somehow to be able to achieve 12 hours of work in an 8 hour day!

Tell us something that might surprise us about you.
My son and I share the same birthday.

What advice do you have for today’s kids?
Always try your best and know that making mistakes is part of how you learn. Be true to who you are and ALWAYS be kind.

What is your personal philosophy?
Assume positive intentions and treat others the way you hope to be treated.

What three traits define you?
Hardworking, fair minded, optimistic
